Studio OHM has taken inspiration from the 1970s origins of this Marylebone maisonette to create a contemporary London bolthole for a family that already has a period property in the country. The couple liked the idea that this second home would be very different to the old rectory they share with their two teenage sons.
‘Our thoughts were that we should listen to the architecture of the property rather than try to make it into something it isn’t,’ explains Emma Oldham, one of the directors at Studio OHM, ‘especially as it has that very 1970s Barbican concrete-box feel, with strong lines.’
The concrete floors have been covered with Sisal Shaft carpeting from Sinclair Till but the ceilings remain a feature, having simply been
painted. But the concrete presented restrictions — there was no possibility of installing down- lighters, so wall lights and lamps provide the main source of light in addition to the existing ceiling points. One long wall on the ground floor has been painted in a dark Dulux emulsion to emphasise the linear layout of the maisonette and this also pulls the dining area into the living space around the L-shaped area.
A modular, linear Flow sofa from Designers Guild also mirrors the L shape of the room and the long PAB 05 B&B Italia unit forms another line against the black wall.
The flat has three bedrooms and three bathrooms (two are ensuite). The downstairs, with its slick, bright pieces, is seen as an area for the boys while the upstairs bedroom space,
which features a more luxurious colour palette and materials, is a retreat for the couple. The master bedroom has plenty of silver and glitz, with the Caboche light by Foscarini and lilac and silver fabrics from Fox Linton and Bruno Triplet. There are two Camilla chairs from Poliform and a chest of drawers from Conran. The bathrooms bring back strong colours with Metropolis floor tiles from Domus and Thai Brick wall tiles from the World’s End Tiles.
The architecture of the property has provided a wealth of inspiration for this interior, which the client has definitely embraced. ‘We got great feedback from them,’ says Oldham. ‘We pushed their boundaries and they enjoyed the whole process of creating something truly different to what they were used to.’
